Call for Improved Nutrient Screening

Media Release

20 August, 2020: A Tasmanian vet is calling for horse owners and trainers to delve deeper into understanding the nutritional status of their animals after seeing the devastating effects of unintentional long-term malnutrition during  her long career.

Dr Susan Peden believes issues such as loss of bone density, behavioural issues and poor stamina can be prevented by routine screening and monitoring of levels of systemic nutrients and toxic minerals.

Dr Peden will be presenting a valuable webinar on Tuesday 25 August to examine the role of Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis in identifying and monitoring potential health issues, with the aim of improving clinical outcomes and overall health for equine and canine patients. Dr Peden is sharing her knowledge and recent research based on a number of case studies.

Minerals are vital for the function of acid-base balance, enzymatic reactions, energy metabolism, the neuroendocrine system and bone and joint function. Dr Peden says, “Rather than generalised nutritional recommendations provided for each animal grouping, we need a targeted nutritional approach based on the individual’s metabolic assessment. Animal owners and trainers spend a great deal of time and money trying to achieve optimum health, but too much of the wrong nutrients can be just as harmful as not enough.

“Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis provides nutrient and toxic element results, and charts each animal’s biochemical individuality. It is an economical test used by practitioners to detect animal nutritional deficiencies and excesses, as well as toxic metal overload, which results in chronic disease and myriad other conditions”, said Dr Peden.

The webinar content was listed for presentation at the annual AVA Conference which did not proceed due to Covid-19. InterClinical Laboratories will instead host the webinar live on Tuesday 25th August at 7.30pm (AEST). Register here. The cost is $55, or free for registered practitioners at www.interclinical.com.au/webinar

ABOUT:

InterClinical Laboratories has been providing Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis pathology services in Australia for more than 20 years – in human, equine and canine patients. Hair tissue mineral analysis is a non-invasive test that measures the levels of nutrients and toxic metals found in the hair. It can detect an excess or deficiency of nutrient minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc. It can also identify over exposure to toxic metals such as arsenic, aluminium, cadmium and lead.
